Worth knowing burger maple loses its leaves in winter.
Growing tips.
Location: Outside all year round, Burger maple appreciates part shade, especially in hot weather. In spring and autumn, it needs daylight to encourage branching and develop beautiful colors.
In summer only, we advise you to give it an eastern exposure, with sun in the morning and shade in the afternoon, as this tree does not appreciate the scorching summer sun.
In winter, the maple needs and will withstand the cold, so keep it outside! As a precaution, you can protect the roots (the pot) when temperatures are negative, especially using, for example, a winter veil or glass wool..
Watering : For good health, the Burger Maple needs a substrate that is always moist. However, water your tree regularly, allowing the root ball to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid over-watering. Indeed, under- or over-watering is not necessarily beneficial to the good health of your bonsai.
So take the time to manage it properly.
Important: Don't hesitate to water the whole root ball right down to the roots. Water will drain out through the holes in the underside of the pot, or soak the tree in water for a few minutes, to make sure you water all the way down to the roots.
We advise against putting a dish or container under your pot, as the water will stagnate and may cause root rot (too much water = asphyxiation).
In spring/summer, water regularly. In hot weather, water every day! In winter, on the other hand, water according to how closely you monitor the soil. Thanks to the rain and cold, you won't necessarily need to water regularly, as the substrate will remain moist.
Substrate and repotting : Maples are understory species that appreciate cool soil. Avoid planting them in a substrate that is too draining, or in pots that are too thin. Re-pot in spring, every two years, as soon as the buds start to swell.
In our nursery, we use potting soil made up of black peat, blond peat, aged eco, topsoil, horse manure and pozzolan
You can adapt your substrate by mixing it with a more draining substrate such as: akadama, pumice ...
Pruning : During winter, when the leaves have fallen, you can prune for structure and remove superfluous branches. During the growing season, shorten twigs to a pair of leaves with a good pair of scissors.
Fertilization: In the nursery, we use blue tomato/flower fertilizer NPK 12 12 17. It's a perfect nutrient supplement. Put a handful (small or large, depending on pot size) on the substrate from May to October, every 2 months for good tree growth.
Be careful not to fertilize too early, as you'll encourage long shoots with large internodes. Ideally, wait until the end of the first shoot, prune and then start fertilizing.
