Growing Tips

Location: Accustomed to the Mediterranean climate, this is a sun and light-loving variety. Expose it to full sun year-round. However, we recommend a location in a semi-shaded area during periods of high heat and bright sunshine. The Elaeagnus easily withstands extreme cold (down to -20°C).

Watering: keep the soil moist at all times! Water regularly , allowing the root ball to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid excess water. As soon as the surface of the soil starts to dry out, water well, in hot weather, it will be every day ! On the other hand, in winter, water according to the soil monitoring you do. Thanks to the rain and cold, you won't necessarily need to water regularly since the substrate will remain moist.

To do it well: Don't hesitate to water the entire root ball up to the roots, the water will drain away through the holes under the pot or bathe it in water (drenching) for a few minutes, to be sure to water it well. We do not recommend putting a cup/container underneath your pot as the water will stagnate and can cause root rot. (Too much water = asphyxiation).

From March to October, the Elaeagnus needs more water than the rest of the year.

Substrate and repotting: In the nursery, we use potting soil composed of black peat, blond peat, eco-aged, topsoil, horse manure, pozzolana. Repotting should be done at least every 2 years in early spring.

Pruning: Prune your bonsai tree regularly to give it structure. Generally, the new shoots are tender and flexible, which allows for easier pruning. On the other hand, older branches are firmer and more brittle. Elaeagnus is pruned in early spring and autumn. To increase the number of branches and make it denser, prune the shrub from about 1/3 of the previous year's shoots. It is best to do this during the first few years of development. This strain tolerates all shapes of pruning without any problems, even if they are severe.

Fertilization: In the nursery, we use blue tomato/flower fertilizer NPK 12 12 17. Put a handful of them on the substrate (small or large depending on the size of the pot) from spring from May to October, every 2 months, alternating chemical/organic.
