Nandina, also called "Sacred Bamboo" is one of the rare shrubs to have evergreen foliage, whose color changes over the seasons, going from red in spring to green in summer, and finally becoming red-orange in autumn. It offers all the nuances of autumn foliage but which does not fall!

Cultivation Advice

Place it outside all year round in alternating sun and shade, away from cold or drying winds. Sacred bamboo is suitable for all climates thanks to its hardiness. If the climate is too windy or too cold (below -12°C), protect it by wrapping the pot with wintering fabric or glass wool to protect its roots from frost.

The Nandina needs a substrate that is always moist. Water it regularly while letting the root ball dry slightly between two waterings to avoid excess water. In spring/summer, watering will be done regularly, when it is hot, it is every day! On the other hand, in winter, water according to the monitoring of the soil. Thanks to the rain and the cold you will not necessarily need to water regularly since the substrate will remain moist.

Important: Do not hesitate to water the entire root ball down to the roots, the water will drain through the holes present under the pot or bathe the bonsai in water (basinage) for a few minutes, to be sure to water it well. We do not recommend putting a cup/container under the pot because the water will stagnate and can cause root rot. (Too much water = asphyxiation).

Every 2 years, in the fall or spring, using potting soil. Its current substrate is composed of black/blond peat, bark, topsoil, horse manure, pozzolan.

You can carry out a cleaning pruning, if necessary, by removing dead wood and shortening the branches which are unbalancing it.

In the nursery, we use blue tomato/flower fertilizer NPK 12 12 17. Put a handful (small or large depending on the size of the pot) on the substrate from May to October, every 2 months, alternating chemical/organic.
