Bonsai potentilla 1-1

The potentilla needs a consistently moist soil. Water it regularly, allowing the root ball to dry out slightly between waterings to avoid overwatering. In spring/summer, water regularly, even daily, when the weather is warm! However, in winter, water according to your regular monitoring of the soil. Thanks to rain and cold weather, you won't necessarily need to water regularly since the soil will remain moist.

To do this properly: water the entire root ball, right down to the roots; the water will drain through the holes at the bottom of the pot, or soak the tree in water (drenching) for a few minutes. We do not recommend placing a saucer or container under your pot as water will stagnate and can cause root rot. (Too much water = asphyxiation). Avoid tap water, which is hard (this can increase the pH), and opt for well or spring water (rainwater tank).

In the nursery, we use potting soil composed of black peat, blond peat, eco-aged peat, topsoil, horse manure, and pozzolan. Repotting should be done at least every 2 to 3 years. Be careful not to disturb the roots too much.

A light annual pruning will be enough to give your potentilla a beautiful structure and stimulate its summer flowering. For proper pruning, be sure to cut back the twigs (small branches) by a third to facilitate root establishment in the depths of winter. Remove any dry or damaged branches, any that are crossing, and shorten the strongest ones by a third. After flowering, you can lightly prune the stems that have produced flowers.

In the nursery, we use blue tomato/flower fertilizer NPK 12 12 17. Add a small handful (more or less depending on the size of your pot) to the growing medium every two months from May to October.
